Conference Is Now a One-Day Symposium
Because registration has not met the minimum number required to stage the Young Reader Conference, the NAA Foundation has decided to restructure this event. We are hosting a one-day symposium instead of a two-and-a-half day conference.
The symposium is scheduled for Friday, May 15, at the conference facility next door to Foundation and NAA headquarters in Arlington, Va.
Symposium Agenda
11 a.m. - Lunch
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. - From USA WEEKEND Magazine: Newspapers and 21st Century Skills: Jan Brown, director of education resource development, USA Today/Gannett Co. This session introduces 21st century skills and outlines how the newspaper is a natural and effective platform to teach them. Participants will create their own lessons and engage in group discussion.
1 to 1:15 p.m. - Break
1:15 to 2:15 p.m. - Using Technology to Instruct With E-editions: Kimberleigh Hanft, Virginia education consultant, Smart Technologies; and Robie Scott, educational services manager, The Post and Courier, Charleston, S.C. In this interactive presentation, see how SMARTBoards work in the classroom and watch a demonstration of a lesson that involves using a newspaper e-edition.
2:15 to 3 p.m. - Interest Me, Please: Vivian Vahlberg and Stacy Lynch, co-authors, Teens Know What They Want In Online News Sites: Do You?. This session explores the findings of the NAA Foundation/Media Management Center research study on teens and online news sites. Teens want to be informed, but current news sites make it awfully hard. In fact, these sites often are better at repelling teens than attracting them. Learn how current news sites miss the mark and how they could better satisfy - and even grow - teens' interest in news.
3 to 3:15 p.m. - World Young Reader Prizes: Aralynn McMane, director of young reader programs, World Association of Newspapers. Hear about this global competition, which features six categories: editorial, making the news, NIE, public service, brand and press freedom.
3:15 to 3:30 p.m. - Break
3:30 to 5 p.m. - NAA Foundation Young Reader Award Winners: The six recipients of the 2009 awards talk about their winning efforts.
5 to 5:15 p.m. - Break
5:15 to 7 p.m. - Dinner and Roundtable Discussions
7 to 7:30 p.m. - Closing Summary
The symposium is open to all NIE and YEA professionals.
