The NAA Foundation’s Young Reader Awards are designed to recognize, showcase and disseminate new and noteworthy ideas in NIE and YEA programs.
A committee of NIE and YEA professionals worked with the Foundation staff to revise the Program Excellence, NIE Content and Youth Content contests. Based on the committee's input, the Foundation launched the Youth Reader Awards in 2009 to honor innovative products, strategies and/or projects.
Seven award categories are available to U.S., Canadian and International newspapers and newspaper associations. “Young reader” refers to those up to age 18.
The categories are:
- State/Regional/National Press Association NIE
- Newspaper NIE, circulation up to 60,000
- Newspaper NIE, circulation 60,001-150,000
- Newspaper NIE, circulation 150,001 and above
- Youth Editorial, circulation up to 60,000
- Youth Editorial, circulation 60,001 and above
- Collaboration: joint efforts/projects demonstrating cross-departmental cooperation on youth readership
