Ramona the Pest Rules for Publication
This serial story is provided to you at no cost. However, there are some basic rules you must follow:
- We are supplying text and illustrations for all 16 chapters of the book.
- You may run these in the newspaper as long as they appear for 16 or fewer consecutive weeks, one of which must be the week of April 6-12, 2008. (That week includes Drop Everything And Read Day on April 12.) It is OK to run installments on consecutive days, as long as one of the days is April 12, 2008.
- You may suspend the story during winter and/or spring breaks for your local schools.
- You need to create a format for each chapter that will appear in your newspaper. We have not formatted the story, as newspapers will run it in so many different sizes and configurations.
- Please note that the text (both English and Spanish versions) was copied and pasted directly from the layouts for the paperback books. Therefore, the text does not follow traditional newspaper (Associated Press) style. If you use the Spanish version, you should get someone who is familiar with that language to review each chapter prior to publication, in case text was inadvertently altered due to the differences between the layout programs and Microsoft Word.
- Also, please note that the English chapters 7, 9, 13 and 16 come with instructions on placing art with the text. These art files can be found in the folder titled “Ramona Chapter Illustrations.” Again, consult with someone who is familiar with Spanish in order to place these art files in the Spanish-language chapters.
- Each chapter and any promo ads must include three logos, found in the folder titled “Logos and Extras”: NAA Foundation, HarperCollins Children’s Books and D.E.A.R. You are welcome to use the promo ad found in the “Logos and Extras” folder.
- You may add additional sponsor logos to each chapter, with the exception of other book publishers or any of the “sin” industries – tobacco, alcohol, etc. It is your responsibility to meet all ABC guidelines for sponsorship.
- You may not post the story on your Web site (unless it is a secure site that is password-protected). However, you can print out the story and send it to teachers. You may not send it to teachers electronically. It is intended to be an in-newspaper feature.
- You may print the teacher’s guide, send it electronically or post it on your Web site.
- Please include “By Beverly Cleary” with each chapter. Illustrations should be credited to Tracy Dockray.
- Please send three tear sheets from ONE chapter of the story to: NAA Foundation, 4401 Wilson Blvd., Suite 900, Arlington, VA 22203.
