The New NAA Foundation

After reading this, you may want to do some site-seeing.

By Jim Abbott

As we enter a new year, the NAA Foundation is making changes to better reflect who we are and what we do.
This issue of Foundation Update introduces our new logo. We have redesigned it to help people understand that we are an entity separate from NAA. We have retained the familiar “N” from the NAA logo but have added a young person reading the newspaper. That is really what we are all about! We hope you like the change. All new materials coming from the Foundation will now use
this logo.

We are also announcing another big change - our own Web site at www.naafoundation.org. This site is much easier to navigate. New information will be added frequently, so explore it and check back often.
Some of what you will find on this site includes:

  • Our home page offers information about the Foundation and its programs. Link to current and past issues of Foundation Update from the home page and view all press releases that relate to us in the NAA Foundation Press Center. You will also find that Contact Us is a new and expanded section.
  • The Newspaper In Education portion of the site has many new items, including The History of NIE, which provides a detailed account of NIE in the United States. Many people have asked for this information, and it can be helpful in talking about us or applying for grants.

[At www.naafoundation.org,] you will find research reports, curriculum guides, promotional ads and evaluation tools - all available to download free.

We have kept the NIE Web Sites & Resources section that offers links to many NIE Web sites as well as links to our wonderful NIE vendors. Just a few clicks here bring
you samples of great Web sites and detailed information about many NIE products and services available to
your newspaper.

You can find news about the NIE2005 Conference, including program information and registration forms. In NIE Week, you can find information about this year’s theme, order forms for the curriculum guide and ads and click on links to download past guides free.
One of the most exciting new sections is called Reports and Publications. Here you find research reports, curriculum guides, promotional ads and evaluation tools–all available to download free.

The Youth Editorial Alliance section of the site links you to the mission and structure of YEA. A Resources section links you to newspaper youth content sites, information on starting a youth section at your newspaper and a discussion of the importance of growing teen readership.

Another section takes you to Programs run by YEA, including the annual conference, available awards, seminars, Teen$eek and other resources. The Issues and Ideas section leads to topics such as ethics, marketing tips, staffing, retention and recruitment discussions and even story ideas and editorial advice.

In Scholastic Press, you can learn about issues such as our partnership grants and download Press Freedom in Practice, a manual for student media advisers responding to censorship issues. There is a link to order The Starting Point: Young Journalists and the Law, a publication written by the Student Press Law Center and sponsored by the NAA Foundation.
Added to the site at regular intervals will be other new and exciting pages, including a calendar of events, new releases from the Foundation and commentary from experts in education, journalism and newspapers.

We hope you enjoy the new look and increased commitment to quality customer service from the NAA Foundation.
