Tabloid Leads Way in Important Year

Over the 14 years of the NAA Foundation Literacy Tabloid, millions of parents and children have read the section together, smiling over a story, working on an activity, or discussing ideas for next year's cover contest.

In this year of healing, the NAA Foundation has once again produced the annual Literacy Tabloid special section, celebrating International Literacy Day, Sept. 8. The theme, See Clearly? Read, and cover design come courtesy of talented Ariel Frost, 17, of Levittown, Pa.

Specially included this year on page 2 is a letter from First Lady Laura Bush encouraging families to read together and to read the newspaper. A White House word search puzzle appears on page 8. As in the past, newspapers are encouraged to replace individual blocks or pages within the tab with material about local literacy efforts or with acknowledgement of local sponsors.

With Verizon as the national sponsor, the Literacy Day Tabloid comes at no cost to newspapers. There are some major changes from the way it was sponsored last year. First, the Verizon logo will be on the cover, but it will not be an exclusive this year. Newspapers are welcomed to place other, local sponsors on the cover along with the Verizon logo, their own logo and the NAA Foundation logo.

There will be no full-page promotion of the VerizonReads program this year. There will be a small line across the bottom of each internal page, which asks a literacy-related question. To find the answer the reader is encouraged to go to VerizonReads.net. That is a literacy Web site sponsored by Verizon that does not promote the business interests of Verizon or any other entity. ABC has approved the wording of each item.

While International Literacy Day is Sept. 8, you may run the tab at any time that fits your schedules. The Literacy Day Tabloid will come to you on CD-ROM in both Quark and PDF versions. The tab is 8 pages but an extra 4 pages of material, completely formatted, has also been included for your use. The tab will come to you in full color and in grayscale so you may use the form that works best for you. In addition there will be a series of 10 (4"x10") features that are designed to run once a month throughout the 2002-2003 school year.

The International Literacy Day Celebration Tool Kit was produced by the National Literacy Summit Initiative, a special project of the National Coalition for Literacy. The Initiative's goal is to achieve a system of high quality adult literacy, language and lifelong learning services that helps adults in every community make measurable gains toward achieving their goals as family member, workers, citizens , and lifelong learners by 2010.
