NAA Foundation Awards $50,000 To Help Student Newspapers
T he NAA Foundation has awarded $50,000 in seed grant money to partnerships between local newspapers and secondary schools to help establish or revive student newspapers nationwide. Grants of $2,500 each will go to 20 such partnerships.
This is the sixth year grants have been awarded to proposals for creating a student newspaper where none exists or stabilizing and strengthening newspapers at risk. More than 100 schools have benefited from the student/newspaper partnerships that require newspapers and secondary schools to commit to working together. The schools are also encouraged to find a university partner, if possible.
"Many industries have long recognized the need to invest in future talent by providing equipment, support and training for students and teachers at the high-school level," says Toni F. Laws, NAA senior vice president for diversity and NAA Foundation. "The relationship between newspapers and the student journalism initiatives in their local schools has been distant for far too long. Programs like this signal a new era of collaboration."
Grants from the NAA Foundation provide financial assistance to encourage the development and strengthening of the partnerships. The grants cover newspaper production and distribution costs and fees for adviser and staff-member training. Some partnerships also provide paid internships and scholarships.
