Student Journalism

The NAA Foundation supports a number of student media endeavors. The largest of these efforts, begun in 1997, is the Student/Newspaper Partnership Grant program.

Collaboration with the Student Press Law Center resulted in the creation, publication and revision of a guide to student media law, "The Starting Point: Young Journalists and the Law." This report is available from the NAA Foundation for $5. To order your copy, please fill out this email order form. The NAA Foundation and SPLC also collaborated on the publication of "Press Freedom in Practice." This manual for student media advisers serves as a guide for responding to and avoiding censorship.

More recently, the NAA Foundation and SPLC teamed up to produce a variety of online resources: podcasts, downloadable teacher's presentations, quizzes and "Virtual Lawyer," an interactive resource on basic student media law issues.

We also have worked with NewsU at The Poynter Institute to create "Coaching Tomorrow's Journalists," a free online training course for those who work with student writers.
