NAA FOUNDATION HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL NEWS CHALLENGE

Reno – The Newspaper Association of America Foundation has launched its second annual “News Challenge,” an effort to encourage young people to explore the many opportunities that exist in the newspaper industry. Fifteen students from across the country were selected for the program, which began May 30 and runs through June 4 at the University of Nevada, Reno.

News Challenge allows students to work in teams to develop real-world prototypes for the newspaper industry. In doing so, participants interface with digital news executives, advertising and marketing directors, community news advocates, educators and others during a fast-paced week.   This year’s News Challenge focuses on mobile content development, dividing students into three teams to brainstorm innovative mobile applications for newspapers.

“The future of our industry depends on the broad cross-section of skills young people bring to the table, and participants in this year’s News Challenge offer a unique perspective in digital media, advertising and other critical areas,” explained Jeanne Fox-Alston, vice president of the NAA Foundation. “This year’s focus on mobile is especially appropriate given the wide use of this technology among younger readers.”

This year’s program was made possible with generous support from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation.
